Manchester United fans urged to leave thank you messages on ‘Facebook of remembrance’ for Sir Alex Ferguson

The honour might normally be reserved for greats who have met their maker - but Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement as Manchester United manager doesn’t seem to be much different for the fans, who are being encouraged to leave messages of thanks in a ‘Facebook of remembrance’.

His decision to retire at the end of this season marks the end of an era at Old Trafford and, although it’s not quite a leather-bound condolences book, the club’s Facebook page is already beginning to resemble a book of remembrance of the ‘good times’ of the past quarter-century.

United supporters have been leaving descriptions of their favourite moments and high points from the past 26 years of Ferguson’s reign, with the 1999 and 2008 Champions League successes over Bayern Munich and Chelsea expected to feature highly.
