Argentina World Cup win fixed

Colombian drug barons helped hosts Argentina fix a crucial match at the 1978 World Cup, according to a recent book.

It's claimed that Peru's players, as well as the referee and linesmen, each received $50,000 ahead of their match against Argentina, who needed to win by four clear goals to reach the final at the expense of bitter rivals Brazil.

There have always been suspicions about the match, which Argentina won 6-0, before going on to beat Holland 3-1 in the final.

Fernando Rodriguez Mondragon says in Son of the Chessmaster 2 that his uncle, Miguel Orejuela, joint head of the Cali cartel in the Seventies, told him he set up a meeting in Lima between the two countries' football associations which was also attended by representatives of Argentina's military junta.

As well as the bribes, he alleges the Argentine contingent paid $10m to the Peruvian Football Federation and sent a $100m consignment of wheat to Peru, which was suffering a food crisis.
