Newcastle fans warned not to taunt Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio with racist salutes

Police have warned Newcastle fans not to taunt Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio when the two sides meet for the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park on Sunday.

The game between the two hated rivals is usually a combustible affair but police have warned supporters against making racist or offensive gestures in light of the Italian's controversial appointment.

The Black Cats has come under fire for 'past political statements', which include being fined ad handed bans making right-arm salutes to fans in 2005 when he was a Lazio player.

The 44-year-old has since issued a statement denying he was a racist adding "I do not support the ideology of fascism".
