Argentina ban away fans after fatality

Away fans have been banned for the next two rounds of matches in Argentina following the death of a supporter in La Plata on Monday.

One Lanus fan was killed and another man badly injured after police and hooligans clashed before a top-flight match against Estudiantes at the Estadio Cuidad de La Plata.

Officials called the match off at half-time after news of the death and injury emerged.

Local authorities had already announced a ban on travelling fans in the wake of the tragedy, and that has since been extended nationwide across all divisions by the Argentina Football Association.

"The measure will remain in place until the football authorities take action to curb violence in football," regional security minister Ricardo Casal said.

A joint statement from the AFA and the government confirmed that they "have decided jointly that the next two rounds in Argentine football be played without the attendance of the visiting public".
