Tartan Army free to play the bagpipes at Wembley

The Football Association insists talk of it banning the Tartan Army from taking bagpipes into Wembley Stadium when England face Scotland later this summer is just a load of hot air.

The friendly international, scheduled for August 14, will be the first time the two nations have met in 14 years and Scotland’s first visit to the rebuilt national Stadium.

Reports had suggested that, due to health and safety concerns, bagpipe wielding supporters would be turned away at the gate if they attempted to enter the ground with the reed-based, puff-powered instruments tucked under their arm.

However, the FA has said as long as fans apply to the proper channels for permission to bring bagpipes into the ground there should be no reason to turn them away.

A spokesman said: ‘The FA would listen to any specific requests from the proper channels, and look to make provisions where possible.’
