Di Canio given talked to by police after hotel altercation

Paolo Di Canio and two others involved in a fracas at Sunderland's team hotel the night before their 1-1 draw with Southampton were given a talking to by police.

The fiery Italian was kept up until 2am after he called the police when guests at a wedding reception at the Solent Hotel & Spa, in Whiteley, stopped a lift with him and head coach Fabrizio Piccareta on their way to bed to take pictures.

The three men, described by Di Canio as 'drunk,' were pushed away and then proceeded to verbally abuse the Sunderland boss and his staff and a 20-year-old man from Southampton was left with a cut lip. Police confirmed only three men were spoken to and Di Canio said after the match that two of them had run away.
