Webb to referee first ever match at Buckingham Palace

Referee Howard Webb has taken charge of some of the biggest games in world football - the World Cup and Champions League finals to name just two.

But Webb will face his most unusual assignment yet on Monday October 7 when he takes charge of the first ever football match to be played at Buckingham Palace.

The game - which is being played between two Southern Amateur League sides, Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC - has been arranged by Prince William as part of the Football Association's 150th anniversary celebrations to honour football's network of 400,000 vounteers.

Webb said: 'I’ve been lucky enough to referee some of the biggest games in football but to oversee a match at Buckingham Palace will be a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

'It’s also an honour to be involved in an event that celebrates the volunteers within football who give up their time so that millions of people can enjoy the nation’s favourite game.'
