Ronaldo has £7.5m contract riding on Portugal's place in World Cup
Cristiano Ronaldo has a small fortune riding on Portugal safely making it to the World Cup finals.
As well as the massive pull of national pride the Real Madrid forward’s commercial pulling power is riding on getting past Sweden.
Ronaldo is in negotiations with Nike - who also sponsor Zlatan Ibrahimovic, to renew his current £5m a year sponsorship deal signed in 2010.
Nike are proposing an increase of around £2.5m from £5m to £7.5m a year taking him up 2018 but the raise is, in part, based on the Portuguese international being the face of the 2014 World Cup for Nike in Brazil.
Preliminary talks began after Ronaldo put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at Real Madrid worth an estimated 17m euros a year after tax.
Failure to get past Sweden will influence the negotiating power of the Ballon d’Or candidate and Golden Boot favourite as he sits down with Nike to sign the extenstion before the end of the year.
He will remain their number one but Barcelona star Neymar will temporarily take his crown in Brazil, and that will be reflected in Ronaldo’s new deal.
