Blatter could continue unopposed for fifth term

Sepp Blatter could be re-elected unopposed for a fifth term as FIFA president at the age of 79 now that his expected rival Michel Platini looks increasingly unlikely to stand against him.

The strong word inside the FIFA executive committee during their World Cup draw gathering in Brazil was that UEFA chief Platini would not mount a challenge to Blatter if he decides to stand yet again.

Platini, who also doesn’t want to relinquish his UEFA powerbase to a likely German successor, knows that he will not attract nearly enough votes outside Europe to beat Blatter in a ballot.
